Emergency Medical Service (EMS) 973

Emergency Medical Service (EMS) 973

More than 600 medical evacuations and nearly 1300 hours of flight per year… The missions of the heliported EMS of French Guiana represent one of the biggest aerial activities in France on board the Dauphins of the service, from the hospital of Cayenne to the most isolated sites of the department.

The French Guiana Emergency Medical Service (EMS 973) is based at the Cayenne Hospital. Its Centre de Réception et de Régulation des Appels (Centre 15) regulates the “15” and “112” calls (European emergency number that operates in French Guiana). In conjunction with emergency partners (hospital and private health professionals, the armed forces health service, the fire department), it coordinates urgent medical transport, engages the mobile hospital units of Cayenne, Kourou and Saint-Laurent, by land, sea and air, and organizes medical evacuations outside the department. Thanks to the assistance of the CNES and the CSG, the EMS benefits from modern tools of communication for the daily life (network of telemedicine in link with the health centers) and in situation of exception (Post of Advanced Medical Help of communications). A well-equipped unit specialized in nuclear and radiological risks and a medical-psychological emergency unit reinforce the system. All these means, engaged during the Haiti earthquake of January 2010, have enabled the EMS to respond effectively to its medical assistance mission. Teaching, research and teamwork have been a priority as evidenced by the Emergency Care Teaching Center, university training and publications. All in all, French Guiana benefits from an operational EMS well adapted to its environment.
